1000 Grit Diamond Sharpening Stone – 6" x 2" Bench Stone (1000 / 300)

This 1000 grit diamond sharpening stone is a professional double-sided 6" diamond bench stone developed by James Barry for sharpening woodworking tools. Compact yet precision-engineered, it is ideal for refining and finishing plane irons, chisels and woodcarving tools up to 50mm wide.

The 1000 grit surface delivers controlled, fine sharpening for producing a clean, razor-sharp edge, while the 300 grit side provides efficient material removal for edge restoration and initial bevel work.

Manufactured using electroplated industrial diamond bonded directly onto a precision-ground steel substrate (flat to ±0.005"), this 152 x 50mm double-sided diamond plate provides a stable reference surface for accurate, repeatable sharpening.

Why choose this 6" diamond bench stone?

The 6" x 2" format is particularly popular with woodcarvers and detail tool users. Its compact size provides excellent control when sharpening smaller hand tools, while maintaining the flatness required for precision work.

The continuous diamond surface on the 1000 grit side prevents snagging on fine or pointed tools, delivering a smooth honing feel. The 300 grit side incorporates clearance channels for efficient swarf removal during coarse shaping.

Unlike traditional water stones, this diamond sharpening stone requires no soaking and no flattening, saving time while maintaining dependable workshop performance.

Built for professional and serious woodworking use, it delivers the durability and flatness required for repeatable, high-precision results.

What is a 1000 grit diamond sharpening stone used for?

A 1000 grit diamond sharpening stone is considered a fine grit and is used for refining cutting edges after coarse shaping. It removes light material to produce a sharper, cleaner edge suitable for chisels, carving tools and plane blades.

For damaged or heavily worn edges, begin with a 300 grit diamond sharpening stone before progressing to finer grits. For a full sharpening progression, refine first with a 600 grit diamond sharpening stone, then complete the process with 1000 grit for final edge finishing.

Professional-grade construction

  • Electroplated industrial diamond bonded directly to a precision-ground steel substrate

  • Substrate flatness tolerance of ±0.005"

  • Continuous diamond surface on the 1000 grit side

  • Clearance channels on the 300 grit side

  • Clearly marked grit sizes for easy identification

  • Both sides electroplated onto the same substrate for maximum flatness

Unlike layered diamond plates bonded to plastic or secondary bases, this stone is electroplated directly onto the substrate for superior durability and accuracy.

Breaking-in period & technical information

All diamond stones require a short breaking-in period. During early use, excess surface diamond is worn away to expose the designed abrasive layer.

Take care when transitioning from the coarse 300 grit side to the fine 1000 grit side. Wipe tools thoroughly to avoid cross-contamination, which can cause scratching on finer surfaces.

Diamond micron sizes are measured to international grading standards (±11%). The exposed cutting surface represents approximately one-third of the total diamond particle size, with the remainder securely embedded within the nickel matrix during electroplating.
